Luke Powers' Picture Book, produced by Tommy Spurlock (Rick Danko, Rodney Crowell) and featuring Garth Hudson of The Band, is an Americana autobiography in song. Literate and tuneful, the CD has received critical raves and world-wide airplay, and Powers has drawn comparisons to John Prine and James McMurtry. PRWEB) September 12, 2007 -- Luke Powers is not your ordinary Nashville songwriter. A PhD in English from Vanderbilt University and MA in Folklore from UNC, he writes songs in the traditi on of William Blake as much as Bob Dylan. Smart, quirky, offbeat, at times haunting--usually in 3 minutes or less. Theme: His new CD Picture Book is a blend of acoustic and electric Americana music that recounts his coming-of-age in the South. Powers writes about his childhood, running the woods of Signal Mtn, TN, once peopled by the Cherokee ("removed" in the 1830s). He writes about first kisses in the Confederate cemetery, having a love-hate affair with an older woman "living on air." His story also includes his "portrait of the artist as a young songwriter"--and his sad realization that Music Row (once home to Dylan, Cash, Kristofferson, Prine and Townes Van Zandt) has been bought out "Corporate Country". He writes about making music with Tommy Spurlock from the gutter of Music Row--taking Neil Young's advice that the ditch is always more interesting than the middle of the road.

Nashville, TN (PRWEB) September 8, 2007 -- What freaks out Rascal Flatts bassist/vocalist Jay DeMarcus more than anything else?
"Man-eating snakes. When it comes to snakes...I'm running through the yard like a girl, period," DeMarcus tells GACTV.com as part of the Web site's exclusive online video question-and-answer session with members of the top country music group. Rascal Flatts is GAC's Artist of the Month for September. Rascal Flatts members DeMarcus, Gary LeVox and Joe Don Rooney answer questions submitted to GAC by fans. Questions run the gamut from how the guys spend their time when they're not touring, how they got their "big" break, and what was their most embarrassing moment on stage LeVox grins widely as he remembers an incident one might say was "ripped" from the headlines. "We were on this real tall stage and [the audience is shooting cameras from way down low," he recalls. "On about the second song of an hour-long set, I was jumping up and the entire crotch of my pants ripped out, and I'm thinking 'so what am I going to do for another 55 minutes?'" Want to hear the rest of the story? Log on to GACTV.com to this and additional candid answers to dozens of other questions in GACTV.com's special Artist of the Month feature with Rascal Flatts. The GACTV.com Artist of the Month package also includes a photo gallery, trivia contest and a sweepstakes in which one lucky winner will receive a guitar and a plaque autographed by DeMarcus, Rooney and LeVox. .

Television and country music star Billy Ray Cyrus joins other celebrities in wearing jeans Oct. 5th on behalf of the Women's Cancer Programs of the Entertainment Industry Foundation (EIF) Merriam, KS (PRWEB) August 27, 2007 -- Billy Ray Cyrus is the latest name to be added to the roster of celebrities putting on their jeans on October 5 for Lee National Denim Day, one of the nation's largest single-day fundraisers for breast cancer.
Cyrus, who has a family history of breast cancer, has volunteered his time to the campaign which raises funds for the Women's Cancer Programs of EIF. He is asking people nationwide to wear their jeans on October 5 in exchange for a $5 donation for the fight against breast cancer. A multi-platinum singer/songwriter and star of the hit Disney Channel series "Hannah Montana," Cyrus recently released his debut album for Walt Disney Records, "Home at Last." The CD is currently in the Top 15 on Billboard's Country Album chart. To encourage people to participate, Cyrus has recorded both radio and television public service announcements and will do television interviews with stations across the country. Additionally, Cyrus has created an online team page, a new feature of the campaign, dedicated to "his girls"--his mom, wife, and three daughters. Fans that join his team on denimday.com have a chance to win an autographed copy of "Home At Last" or a pink Les Paul Vixen guitar from Gibson Guitars. "It's an honor for me to be able to represent the Entertainment Industry Foundation for this incredible cause through Lee National Denim Day," said Cyrus. "I can tell the women in my life how to handle a lot of things, but I can't protect them from breast cancer. I want to raise so much money that people stand back and say 'wow, that was fun and it did a lot of good.'" With this commitment, Cyrus joins a list of honorary celebrity ambassadors who have built team pages on denimday.com, including 2007 lead ambassador Mariska Hargitay and celebrated actresses Gabrielle Union and Kerry Washington. Also supporting Denim Day for the second year in a row is the cast of NBC's "The Office" - Steve Carell, Ted Krasinski, Reinn Wilson, Jenna Fischer, and B.J. Novak - who appear in a television public service announcement which uses the show's signature quirky humor to ask viewers to get involved. The PSA will air on NBC stations throughout August and September and can also be viewed on denimday.com.
