All the news from country music's most reliable source. Week of Dec. 8, 2008 Miley Cyrus and Nashville-based singer-songwriter Jeffrey Steele picked up a Golden Globe nomination Thursday (Dec. 11) for a song they co-wrote for Disney's animated film, Bolt. This is a discussion I've had with several people lately, and it keeps coming up more and more in serious (and even not so serious) conversation. Namely, what is going to become of country music? It's so important and timely a subject that everyone with a Dierks Bentley is in Oslo, Norway, to perform Thursday (Dec. 11) at the 15th annual Nobel Peace Prize concert. Lycrecia Williams Hoover, the stepdaughter of Hank Williams, will visit an exhibit about the Williams family at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum on Saturday (Dec. 13). Singer-songwriter Radney Foster has signed a deal with Sea Gayle Music, a publishing company co-founded by Chris DuBois, Frank Rogers and Brad Paisley. I'm making a list -- and checking it twice -- of my favorite independent albums from the last few months. From traditional country to mellow singer-songwriters, here's a mixed bag of goodies for the adventurous music lover. In a video message on his Web site, Brad Paisley is asking fans and amateur filmmakers to create a music video for "Start a Band," using green-screen technology. Tim McGraw, Toby Keith, and Taylor Swift are among the country artists slated to appear at We Fest near Detroit Lakes, Minn., on Aug. 6-8. Trace Adkins has rescheduled six tour dates he had to cancel earlier this year after being sidelined by an intestinal flu, but the nation's economic crisis has caused a concert promoter to cancel a New Year's Eve show with Lynyrd Skynyrd in Nashville. Back in the days when country music was mostly country people, artists would make suggestions about other artists to help them along the way with their dreams and careers. Ernest Tubb helped Loretta Lynn by having her sing live at his Record Shop. He and Five fresh Christmas carols twinkle onto the latest Billboard country song chart, while Taylor Swift's Fearless and the Zac Brown Band's "Chicken Fried" continue as the No. 1 album and song. It's the third straight week at the top for Swift Kenny Chesney has named his 2009 tour the Sun City Carnival, according to a publicist for BNA Records. Since you can't tie a ribbon around an MP3 file, why not stuff the stockings with these country compilations? From relative newcomers like Dierks Bentley and Craig Morgan to classic artists such as George Jones and Willie Nelson, here's one of the Vince Gill has been named the Country Music Hall of Fame's artist-in-residence for 2009. Julianne Hough is making several Christmas appearances on TV shows over the next two weeks. Tracks by Dierks Bentley, Brooks & Dunn, the Dixie Chicks, Miranda Lambert and Brad Paisley will soon be available as downloadable content for the Rock Band gaming platform, Harmonix and MTV Games have officially announced. |
